The A6, Off the Clock

By the time the road begins to climb and the first rain reaches the windscreen, the city is far enough behind for unanswered emails to lose their urgency. The jacket has moved to the rear seat, the phone is no longer within reach, and there is no particular reason to arrive anywhere by a certain hour.

The Audi A6 has always appeared perfectly at ease in executive life. It carries authority without making a performance of it, which is perhaps why it has so often been considered a gentleman’s car. Yet a life shaped by responsibility also requires the occasional departure from it, and the same qualities that make the A6 such a natural companion through the working week take on a different character when the office towers disappear from view.

On a mountain road darkened by rain, its restraint feels especially appropriate. The landscape does not need competing with, nor does the silence need filling. From inside the cabin, the weather becomes part of the journey: water moving across the glass, cloud settling over the peaks and the road unfolding gradually through it all.

This is not escape in the dramatic sense. It may be nothing more than a night away, booked late and reached by the longer route. What matters is the distance it creates between the man behind the wheel and the version of him whose attention is usually divided between meetings, messages and whatever is expected next.
